May 2012 – Facility of the Month – Smryna, TN Firestone store

The Firestone Complete Auto Care store in Smyrna, TN, is recognized as this month’s “Facility of the Month” for achieving LEED Gold Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.

The USGBC LEED program certifies buildings based on their efforts to be environmentally friendly. There are four levels of certification that buildings can achieve, from the most basic, LEED Certified, level to the highest certification level, LEED Platinum. The certification depends on the number of environmentally friendly features incorporated into the buildings. The features range from water efficient plumbing to local landscaping to low-emission paints and wall coverings.

The store, which opened in June of 2009, achieved the second highest certification level, LEED Gold, by incorporating a range of environmentally preferable features, including improved indoor air quality from the use of low-VOC paints, stains, carpets and sealants; ultra low-flow fixtures that will reduce water consumption by 30%; solar panels that generate 12.5% of the building’s electricity; a reflective metal roof that lowers heating and cooling costs; sidewalks using recycled rubber from tires; and landscaping that does not need a sprinkler system, thanks to the use of 100% recycled rubber tire mulch and native and drought tolerant plant species.

In addition to this incredible achievement, other Bridgestone Retail Operations have also taken on significant environmental initiatives. The Portland, OR store, for example, offers a “green” oil change service utilizing a recycled and refined oil product. The Automotive Service Association of Arizona has named five Firestone Complete Auto Care store locations in the state as “green shops” through its Green Business Automotive Program. And Minnesota’s Tires Plus™ store locations were recently certified as “Green Star” automotive service providers through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s voluntary Environmental Audit Program.

Bridgestone Retail Operations (BSRO), which owns Firestone Complete Auto Care, has a long tradition of working to enhance the environment and supporting conservation initiatives, while constantly looking for new ways of making even great improvements. Not only does BSRO want to protect the environment, but they also work with and encourage customers and communities to do the same. Through Bridgestone’s “One Team, One Planet” initiative, BSRO supports and engages in community based environmental programs that make notable environmental improvements to communities in which they operate. The Smyrna store is just one example of that commitment to the environment.
